I first qualified in 1997 as a Beauty Therapist at Thurso college. Since then I went on to gain Diplomas in Swedish, Indian Head and Sports and Remedial Massage, I also trained in Joint Mobilisation, Hot/Cold Stones and Advanced Remedial techniques too. I can offer advice on Hyper mobility syndrome as well!
I initially trained as a Beauty Therapist in 1997 and at first I found Massage Therapy was the main treatment I did. I worked for Skibo Castle and Akergill Tower even whilst still training at college and the treatments I would do for them were almost always just Massage Therapy. Straight after leaving college I went on to work in a few local salons, gaining lots of years of experience in both massage, beauty and managing a business. It was in my final years as a Beautician that I was approached by the local Osteopathic and Physiotherapy clinic to do a more advanced form of massage. I got some in-house training but realised quite quickly through part need and curiosity that I wanted to know more. This led me to the start of the journey which I'm on now, which is to offer the best possible massage treatments to people that I can.
I'm a mother and a grandmother with a very supportive partner that helped encourage me to set up my own clinic on coming out of the first covid lockdown. It was a risky time to set up with further closures possible on the horizon but he had every faith I could do it. In my first year of business, despite a further covid closure, I wanted to pay something back to support our NHS. So, for one month I did a special 50% off for anyone working within the NHS and it proved to be very popular indeed! In year two I also gave out a free voucher to be raffled off to help the MacMillan Cancer group. Year three I finally gained my Advanced level qualification, a personal goal of mine to achieve. I also kept my prices low throughout the UK financial crisis that followed choosing instead to give out loyalty vouchers to help make it easier for people to continue to get their treatments. Later on in that year my business stepped up a gear becoming incredibly busy with clients booking well in advance just to ensure they can see me! For me the journey doesn't stop there, I'm always looking for the next training course to further improve my skillset!
As a fully registered professional with both NAMMT (National Association of Massage and Manipulative Therapists) and a Member of The GUILD of Beauty Therapists (MGBT) it is a requirement that I keep my Knowledge up to date with ongoing training. I have to complete 20+ hours of training and CPD every year! I'm required to have an up to date first aid certificate and have full liability insurance. So far, aside from my main qualifications, I have completed a covid specific prevention of infection course in order to ensure safe working practices. I have also completed a professional standards qualification, a CPD course on mental and emotional health and wellbeing perspectives and an in-depth course on joint hyper mobility syndromes including advice on exercising and general self care from one of Britains leading experts in the field!
You will really reap the benefits of massage, especially if it becomes a regular part of your life. My goal is for us to work together to help take good care of you and your general health and wellbeing. I will never take advantage of you by pushing you into having a treatment more regular than is needed. Home care advice will always be offered in order to help continue the good effects of your treatment or to help rehabilitate you, to prevent future injuries and live the best life you can without having to solely rely on me to keep you well (it's called best practice and I believe in doing the right thing above making profits!) I will always try to greet you with a happy smile, I'm very friendly and always happy to lend an ear should you need to chat and you can be sure it will always remain confidential! I will always put 100% effort into offering you the best treatment I can.
Communication is key. In order to properly help you I need to know what discomfort you're feeling, experiencing and what you are looking to gain from your treatment. In return, I will explain the appropriate treatment necessary, inform you of my findings as I treat you and I will let you know what you can realistically expect to gain from it. I require certain medical information prior to treatment so that I can adapt your treatment to suit your needs. In some cases a doctors note may be required prior to treatment. ALL information shared between us will be kept strictly confidential and locked up safely within the practice! I am duty bound by the same laws as any health care professional with regards to the taking and keeping of records. The industry requires I keep your file for 8 years after your last visit, after which you are legally allowed to ask for them to be erased.
Massage is a great tool to help you heal or feel better. Whether it's for stress, injury, pain relief, maintenance or simply to pamper yourself, the benefits of massage can be life changing and I would be honoured to take this journey with you. Massage with therapeutic touch has been clinically proven to help ease pain, tension and even boost your mood and your immune system. More information comes out every year from the science world that backs this type of therapy as a valid treatment for a number of issues. It's certainly not just creating a placebo effect! There's an actual chemical change within the body in response to therapeutic massage that really does help you feel better by releasing serotonin and dopamine, lowering heart damaging cortisol levels and boosting your T-cells to help your immune system. Even the NHS now recommends, employs and uses Massage Therapy for certain medical conditions!
I will always carry out all treatments with the very latest of professional guidance. I have a professional standards qualification and industry specific protocols to follow and adhere too. All new appointments will require a consultation form to be filled out first to ensure that it is safe for you to receive your treatment and you can message me directly to discuss the right type of treatment for you and your specific needs.
If you are in pain I will adapt my treatment slightly, I will ask a few very important safety questions, I may perform a few physical checks first just to asses if you should receive your treatment, or I may refer you to another medical professional. I'm classed as a complimentary form of health care. Massage is not a replacement for medical care and is only meant to compliment any other formal type of medical treatment.
I have building safety regulations to follow laid out by Naver Business Centre such as fire safety protocols, building security and out of hours procedures. The treatment room will always be clean, sterile and well ventilated. I keep a well equipped first aid kit in the room, a few medical items such as a thermometer, blood pressure meter, oximeter and patella hammer. I have an up to date first aid certificate and there's a defibrillator at reception (but hopefully I will never require these items!!)
Deep Tissue Massage, as the name suggests, reaches the deeper layers of tissue. This treatment type should only be used for those in general good health! It is used to break down or alleviate tension, tight/shortened muscle fibres, tight fascia, adhesions, contractures, muscle cramps or spasms (though sometimes gentler works better), scar tissue and pressure points such as trigger points throughout the body. This massage is particularly beneficial for athletes, MS, contractures, cerebral palsy, some historic injuries and for those who have poor posture and sit for long periods of time. I use Deep Tissue and Myofascial Release sometimes when performing Sports and Remedial Massage but having said that I will always work within your own particular level of comfort. Deep tissue isn't suitable for everyone, if you are in a lot of pain I will only ever use a very light pressure regardless of the treatment you choose! Deep tissue used wrongly can cause you to tense up, sometimes worsening the pain you are in and risking putting you into a state of healing crisis.
This very gentle Massage is used to help eliminate toxins and pressure in the lymph vessels by pushing any excess lymphatic fluid back up the body to the organs of elimination such as the spleen, liver and lymph nodes. This type of fluid retention is often quite visible in the lower legs as swelling and it can come about via injury, arthritis, surgery or illness. You should always see a Doctor first just to check that the swelling isn't something more serious!
Swedish Massage is a soft tissue massage designed to melt away muscle tension, relax your body and mind and improve the flow of blood back to your heart. It is extremely therapeutic as it decreases muscle toxins, increases oxygen levels and T-cells in the blood stream and helps improve flexibility in the body. It can also help with fluid retention too along with digestive issues and so much more! It is also the basis for ALL massage modalities.
With this treatment you can have your Hot or Cold Stones Massage along with either the Swedish or Remedial massage, including an Indian Head Massage and Aromatherapy oils too! It has the widest range of both mental and physical health benefits. What also helps make this so luxurious is that it includes everything you could possibly need in one calming chilled out session. Included if you want is the use of the electric heated under blanket, an extra soft fleece top blanket and pillow cases, luxurious towelling bedcovers, a super soft warm fleece blanket, mittens and booties, heated aromatherapy oils, steamy hot towels to remove any excess oil and towelling drapes which have pockets for the hot stones heated in the towel warmer for even extra warmth should you want it. The perfect way to warm yourself up from head to toe! Alternatively you can switch the heat completely for cold or have an alternating hot and cold stone massage along with uplifting oils for a more invigorating massage and a more enlivening, refreshing effect. Gift vouchers are available for this truly unique pampering session. Choose from either the full body or upper body versions and express what elements you would prefer to include on the day.
As the name suggests this is a massage that is done sat down using the upper part of a seated massage chair placed on a desk or the bed with you sat in an ordinary chair or wheelchair making it particularly useful for those that cannot lye down on the treatment couch. It's particularly useful for weight issues, pregnancy or any other type of mobility or medical issue. Incredibly comfortable to use it can be used in combination with either the gentler Swedish Massage, Indian Head Massage or the deeper Remedial Massage techniques. For obvious reasons this one is for the back, neck, head and shoulder area only. Fully adjustable with removable parts my version allows for the growing pregnant belly to be accommodated much more easily than the average massage chair allows.
If you are pregnant and looking for a treat like this, please be aware that I cannot treat you in your first trimester for safety reasons.
Seated massage can be done fully clothed if you like.
Indian Head Massage is based upon traditional techniques that have been used in India for hundreds of years. It's benefits include migraine and headache relief, the promotion of good hair growth and condition, the stimulation of lymphatic drainage, the relief of insomnia and fatigue, it reduces the symptoms of anxiety and depression, renews your energy levels and can help boost your memory capabilities. It is a very relaxing and sometimes spiritual massage done fully covered/clothed and mainly chair based either with or without the seated massage adaptation of a head rest. It can also be done lying down upon request. It includes the head, neck, face, shoulders and upper arms.
Sometimes I like to use a few of these moves at the end of a Swedish or Remedial massage session if time allows, particularly if you are stressed and suffer from mental health issues. It's a great way to re-balance your chakras and an easy "quick fix" or more affordable alternative to the other types of massage I offer.
Hot/Cold Stone Massage uses Lava Stones, Marble Stones and Jade Gem stones and can include some mixed gem stone placement too. For this particular massage the stones can be used hot or cold to massage you and it is often paired with a Swedish Massage or Remedial Deep tissue massage as well. This is like two types of massage in one treatment, a hand and a stone massage! If someone offering you this treatment has simply placed the stones on your skin and left you to relax without offering you a massage then you have been sold short!!
The Hot Lava Stones are pre-heated in warm water and used along with warm oil to massage you to help relax and ease muscle tension.
The Cold Marble Stones are pre-cooled in cold water to massage you and to soothe or invigorate the skin. It can also help relieve inflammation, improving mobility, easing aches and pains and making it particularly good post injury.
Alternatively Jade stones can be used either warm or cold for their more emotion balancing and rejuvenating properties.
If you prefer you can alternate between the Hot and Cold Stones for a more invigorating massage! (This version is much nicer than you might think).
To finish, as an extra add on you can have a gemstone therapy 'well woman' treatment! There's not just a good selection of gem stones for realigning your chakras, there's also a Jade comb to help promote healthy hair growth (used in conjunction with nourishing hair oils), and there's Jade facial rollers and a Gua Sha tool which are used for their anti ageing facial properties too (used in conjunction with anti ageing essential oils and serums for an even greater effect). For best results combine it with the Jade Body stones and a special 'well woman' essential oil blend to help rebalance your hormones, your mood and improve your skin tone and texture. This treatment might be particularly good for those going through the peri-menopause, menopause and beyond. (I'm hoping to do a course dedicated specifically to treating the menopause which might change and adapt what I can offer for this particular issue).
All in all this is probably one of the most comprehensive set of stone treatments you'll likely see locally especially at this price!!
Sports Massage and Advanced Remedial Massage can help aid in relieving aches, pains and tension whilst also helping to correct postural imbalances, poor mobility and movement patterns. It is a great way to help prevent and treat sports injuries and it also helps those suffering from a whole range of medical conditions including things like MS, frozen shoulder, rotator cuff issues, spinal lesions and arthritis. Included is soft or deep tissue massage (at a level you can tolerate), APR physical tests, Trigger Point Therapy, Muscle Energy Techniques, Mobilisation techniques, Myofascial Release, Positional Release Techniques and Postural Exercise and Stretching advice.
This treatment, mainly used for assessment is not available on its own and is NOT like manipulation! This technique involves the slow movement of a joint (whilst keeping within its normal range of motion), to asses and feel for any issues that you may have there. Sometimes using a strap for larger joints it can also involve a gentle stretch or compression depending upon the results needing to be achieved. Particularly good for improving joint health this technique is sometimes included in the Sports and Remedial Massage wherever it may be needed. The stretching part is NOT recommended for those with joint hyper mobility issues.
Aromatherapy massage involves the use of essential (and highly concentrated) plant based oils and a carrier base oil. Specially blended on the day to suit your individual needs, this very relaxing Soft Tissue Massage can be tailor made to help with a variety of issues. The essential oil molecules are not only inhaled but also absorbed through the skin as well and it includes reflexology pressure point therapy on the feet too. This treatment also includes a special FREE home care gift to complement your treatment that allows you to take what's left of your blended oils home in either a pretty glass roll on bottle or in a glass jar with moisturising cream making what I'm offering with this treatment truly unique and very good value indeed!!
