MASSAGE ......helping you get back on the road to recovery
At North Coast Massage.
Set up by Carol Swan Advanced Remedial Therapist DARM DSM DRSM DIHM MGBT NAMMT.
BASED AT NAVER BUSINESS CENTRE, THURSO
I first qualified in 1997 as a Beauty Therapist at Thurso UHI. I went on to train in a more advanced type of massage therapy with the Scottish School of Massage in Inverness, at Michaelmass Massage in Culbokie, the Highland Institute of Massage in Inverness and with a number of professional online accredited courses to
As a fully registered professional with NAMMT (National Association of Massage and Manipulative Therapists) and a Member of The GUILD of Beauty Therapists (MGBT) it is a requirement that I keep my Knowledge up to date with ongoing training. I have to complete 20+ hours of training and CPD every year! I'm required to have an up to date First Aid certificate and I have full liability insurance to. Having an Advanced Level 5 qualification in Massage, the equivalent of a Degree Level, my anatomy, physiology and pathology knowledge is of an incredibly high standard too. Some of the techniques I use have even come from the Osteo/Physio world. So far, aside from my main qualifications, I have also completed a covid specific Prevention of Infection course, a Professional Standards qualification, a CPD course on Mental and Emotional Health and Wellbeing Perspectives and an in-depth course on Joint Hyper Mobility Syndromes including advice on exercising and general self care from one of Britains leading experts in the field! I also trained in Oncology Massage with Gayle MacDonald and she quite literally wrote the book on the subject! (Medicine Hands)
Proper certification from an accredited course is incredibly important for your safety!
With over 28 years of experience in a number of massage modalities, my main goal is to work with you to meet your body's needs. I initially started out as a Beauty Therapist before I took a slight career change and went on to specialise solely in massage. I really wanted to advance my massage skills with further training in order to be able to help more people. During the years I worked as a Beauty Therapist I gained experience working at Skibo Castle, Ackergill Tower and in 3 beauty salons initially. I went on to work at the local Osteopathic/Physio clinic and this is when I decided to specialise in training in Advanced Massage techniques. In 2020, post covid I set up my own clinic and a year later I also signed up with the Scottish Football Association as an extra pair of hands when needed. I try to combine all my training and work experience in order to offer you a multidisciplined approach to treating any issues you may have in order to offer you a very comprehensive package indeed! I find this way you will see results much quicker and the benefits should last for much longer too.
The journey doesn't stop here, I plan to train in Thai Compress Massage, Pregnancy Massage, Menopause Massage, Advanced Manual Lymphatic Drainage techniques including bandaging and Sports k-taping to name but a few techniques I'm interested in specialising in! It's all about providing the very highest quality of service for the absolute best possible results for as many different conditions as I can. That's not to say I don't already have a basic understanding already within these particular fields it's just I always like to go one better!
Massage is a great tool to help you heal or feel better and the benefits can be life changing and I would be honoured to take this journey with you. Massage with its therapeutic touch has been clinically proven to help ease pain, tension and even boost your mood and your immune system. More information comes out every year from the science world that backs this type of therapy as a valid treatment for a number of issues. It's certainly not just creating a placebo effect! There's an actual chemical change within the body in response to therapeutic massage that really does help you feel better by releasing serotonin and dopamine, lowering heart damaging cortisol levels and boosting your T-cells to help your immune system. Even the NHS now recommends, employs and uses Massage Therapy for certain medical conditions!
At North Coast Massage, I believe that everyone deserves to feel relaxed and rejuvenated. I am committed to providing you with a customised massage experience that addresses your specific needs. Whether you are dealing with chronic pain, stress, or just need to unwind, I have the perfect massage for you. With my personalised approach and attention to detail, you can trust that you will leave feeling lighter, refreshed and renewed. On offer are a number of different types of treatment. The Advanced Remedial Massage also includes techniques such as Triggerpoint Therapy, Positional Release Technique, Myofascial Release, Muscle Energy Techniques and Mobilisation. More detail on these will be explained in person. All these techniques are soft tissue techniques and very safe for just about everyone to receive.
I will always carry out all treatments within the very latest of professional guidance. I have a professional standards qualification and industry specific protocols to follow and adhere to. These are all in line with current GDP (General Data Protection) laws and are also set out by the GCMT (General Council of Massage and soft tissue Therapy).
All new appointments will require a consultation form to be filled out first to ensure that it is safe for you to receive your treatment and you can message me directly to discuss the right type of treatment for you and your specific needs.
If you are in severe pain I will adapt my treatment slightly, I will ask a few very important safety questions, I may perform a few physical checks first just to asses if you should receive your treatment, or I may refer you straight to another medical professional. I'm classed as a complimentary form of health care. Massage is not a replacement for medical care and is only meant to compliment any other formal type of medical treatment.
I have building safety regulations to follow laid out by Naver Business Centre such as fire safety protocols, building security and out of hours procedures. The treatment room will always be clean, sterile and well ventilated. I keep a well equipped first aid kit in the room, a few medical items such as extensive PPE, a thermometer, blood pressure meter, oximeter , nebuliser and patella hammer. I have an up to date first aid certificate and there's a defibrillator at reception (but hopefully I will never require any of these items!!)
When I set my prices I decided I wanted to offer a high standard care for a very reasonable price in order to be able to help as many people locally as possible. I took a look at prices locally being set within salons and clinics and set mine between the two. At the start of 2023, with the cost of living crisis, most places put their prices up due to the increased cost in products, electric, heating and rent etc. I took a different approach and decided to keep my prices the same for a bit longer and even handed out loyalty cards in order to help regular clients continue to afford their treatments at this tough time. A new year and a new price and yet I still continue to be really good value for money for Advanced Massage and Remedial work! This type of work is not "just a luxury" it is essential to good health and wellbeing!
Communication is key. In order to properly help you I need to know what discomfort you might be feeling or experiencing and what you are looking to gain from your treatment. In return, I will explain the appropriate treatment necessary, inform you of my findings as I treat you and I will let you know what you can realistically expect to gain from it. ALL information shared between us will be kept strictly confidential and all forms will be locked up safely within the practice! I am duty bound by the same laws as any health care professional with regards to the taking and keeping of records. The industry requires I collect certain information prior to treatment, post treatment and keep your file for 8 years after your last visit, after which you are legally allowed to ask for them to be erased.
In my first year of business, despite a further covid closure, I wanted to pay something back to support our NHS. So, for one month I did a special 50% off offer on all treatments for anyone working within the NHS and it proved to be very popular indeed! In year two I also gave out a free voucher to be raffled off to help the MacMillan Cancer group. Now in my third year I signed up to Nancy's Natters funding scheme and will be offering cancer patients a discount on all Oncology Massage treatments.
It is my mission is to help you achieve your goal whether that be for pain relief, relaxation, stress relief, muscle reconditioning, help with your posture, injury prevention and recovery. I can also help relieve symptoms associated with certain medical pathologies such as MS, Cancer or Arthritis etc. I want you to leave your session feeling better than when you came in, but my main priority is your overall health and wellbeing. When I need to, I will adjust your treatment and my pressure to suit your specific needs and taste and should I have to refer you on to another qualified professional it is done to ensure safe working practice and achieve the best outcome for you either directly or indirectly! I have every bit of equipment I can possibly think of to ensure your every comfort and need is met and I even redecorated my room in order to ensure that you feel right at home in these surroundings.
You will really reap the benefits of massage, especially if it becomes a regular part of your life. My goal is for us to work together to help take good care of you and your general health and wellbeing. I will never take advantage of you by pushing you into having a treatment more regular than is needed. Home care advice will always be offered in order to help continue the good effects after your session. It will help rehabilitate you, prevent future injuries and hopefully live the best possible life you can without having to solely rely on me to keep you right (it's called best practice and I believe in doing the right thing above making profits!) I put 100% effort into offering you the best treatment I can. I will always try to make you feel at ease and greet you with a happy smile, I'm very friendly and always happy to lend an ear should you need to chat and you can be sure it will always remain confidential!
IT IS IMPORTANT TO MESSAGE ME BEFORE BOOKING YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT either via my work Facebook page, email address or WhatsApp, for FREE. This will give me the chance to tell you what happens next and allow me to explain how the booking system works. We can chat about the severity of any physical problems that you may have and hopefully answer any other questions too. (There are action buttons on this website that are shortcuts to messaging me directly)
There are certain restrictions in place with regards to treating the general public, that I HAVE to adhere to especially in regards to ensuring healthy working practices. The Advanced Remedial work I do is often used to help with pain and injuries which makes it incredibly important I know your medical history first before I treat you. If you are ill please cancel your treatment and only re-book once you have fully recovered, I treat some quite vulnerable immune compromised people that I need to keep my workroom as hygienic as I can for. This also means that I might wear a mask on occasion. If there's a chance that you might be coming down with something I might ask you to reschedule or you might also be asked to wear a mask in the treatment room itself where we will be in a smaller space and within close contact with each other. If you find it difficult or uncomfortable to breathe with a mask on during your treatment I do have other options so please feel free to ask. Massage whilst you are unwell can make you feel worse after so please bear that in mind!
Thank you for your co-operation and please don't forget to read the full details of my regulations, company and general policies by going to my "BUSINESS DETAILS" page or by clicking on the link below as you will be expected to sign to these rules on the day. You will also find a handy map on this page too!
When setting up North Coast Massage I decided to combine the kind of treatment that you would expect to find in a health clinic and blend it with some of the little luxuries that you would expect to find in a top spa.
I've always believed in offering true value for money so my little luxuries don't come at any extra cost to you, it's all included in the price of the treatment, should you want it.
How many times have you booked a Deep Tissue Massage and not got anywhere near what you expected? Being trained in Sports and Remedial Massage I learnt how to apply the proper amount of pressure, safely and correctly and you won't be disappointed!
Deep Tissue sound like too much for you? That's ok, there's something for everyone here! Sometimes deep tissue isn't wanted or appropriate and I will adjust my pressure according to what is best for you. I will always have to heart what's in your best interest at all times. For people with certain medical conditions sometimes less is more!
My experience as a Beauty Therapist should not be underestimated either! In college and in salon training taught me how to use various ferradic machines to improve muscle tone, lymphatic drainage compression suits to help with lymphoedema, electrical massage devices to work deeper than by hand alone, how to blend aromatherapy oils for specific issues and how to spot and treat skin, nail and hair issues too! I have incorporated this training into my practice in order to offer you even better care than just manual massage can on it's own.
The in house training I received whilst working in an osteopath/physio clinic has played a massive part in how I treat, advise and utilise other professionals too. It's the multidisciplined experience that I acquired there that really makes me stand out from the crowd and a little unique in Caithness.
For sports athletes I can offer a muscle conditioning treatment for a decreased risk of injury and to help improve your performance levels. Some of my clients have been able to achieve new PB times! Sports Massage can also help speed up your recovery post activity and address any injuries you may have too!
Luxuries I have include; relaxing music, a warm and cosy room, an electric adjustable treatment couch, a heated under blanket, a cushioned fleece mattress, a towel and oil warmer, extra cushions of all shapes and sizes, a large lightweight quilt, soft fleece blankets, a weighted blanket, a super hygienic treatment bed, wipeable pillows of varying thickness, and a room which is also well ventilated to help ensure that the air you breathe is clean and fresh and not simply just warm as this can make the air humid and stale and a breeding ground for germs. There's bedding in both masculine and feminine colours, a high quality range of essential and base oils, luxury pre-blended oils, scar reducing oil, scented hand made Highland massage wax, slimming and firming cream and aqueous moisturising massage cream too. You get an aromatherapy home care gift with essential oils blended specifically for you in either a pretty glass roller bottle, plain bottle, or a small pot with moisturiser FREE with every aromatherapy treatment you have. There's also a good range of retail products, therapy aids for rehabilitation and I have some beautiful gift vouchers! I take contactless card payments too!
